Both the 40K Radio and the 40K Fight Club are running very similar "painting challenges" for 2010. The idea is to paint a different Force Org slot each month, to finish the better part of an army by the end of the year. Fits in with the idea of a New Year's resolution and all. There are a some Endgame folks participating, but I thought it might be nice to share the work on these forums as well.
I'm hoping that if a hacker like me can get some units done, maybe it will inspire others to finish stuff they have hanging around. Having said that, I say two new guys yesterday who had either never played before (Ork player, sorry I forgot your name) or not played much (Raymond's Space Marines), and they had fully painted armies. COOL!! I find that inspirational as well.
For those not aware, Endgame is home to the "Ordo Pacificus" chapter of the 40K Fight Club, so head on over there and join up!
Here is the reposting of where I am so far. I will add here as I add there as well.

I was reading the BOLS Badab Wars stuff, and it got into some other related reading/surfing, and I was really liking the Alpha Legion stuff and the other stories from the time of the Horus Heresy. For example, One of my Death Watch guys is going to be modified to have a Sons of Horus shoulder pad and the name "Qruze" — in honor of Iacton Qruze, the lone loyal survivor of the Sons of Horus.
That led to me to a project that I am going to use for the challenge — turns out I already have a good portion of the models as "spares" from other projects!
Renegade Alpha Legion
Codex: Space Marine army based on the idea of the Alpha Legion at the time of the Heresy.
They use stealth, trickery, spies and the elite "Effrit" assassin unit led by Omegon, one of the twin Primarchs (Alpharious & Omegon). Even before the Heresy they used people of all walks of life as resources and agents, even killing people to protect the agents' identities. There is source material that they are actually renegade, NOT chaotic. That they made certain decisions based upon contact with an Xenos Cabal that gave them the Vision of what might be. Their "For the Emperor" cry might be based upon that Vision, and may not be the irony that most perceive… Check out

I thought about doing CSM, but that's another codex/system to buy and to learn. Also, I'm following the "they might not be all bad" idea, so I want to stay with the SM ‘dex.
I've reviewed the "assassin" & "stealth" themes and think I can represent them with Shrike as "Omegon" and scouts. I am using Cato Sicarius as "Alpharious," to add to the "quick hit" theme.
Here's the concept as it existed at the beginning of the year. I have proxied some of this in a couple of games. I'm thinking anti-tank (specifically AV14) will be my biggest weakness most of the time:
Alpha Legion at the Brink – 3407 pts
HQ:
[June?]Captain Cato Sicarius
[January] Shadow Captain Kayvaan Shrike
(Alternate: WH Inquisitor Lord for "assassin" theme)
Troops:

[November]Scout Squad (10) (Combat Blade x3; Shotgun x2; Sniper Rifle x3; Heavy Bolter w/Hellfire Shells); Sergeant (Melta Bombs; Power Weapon)

(Alternate: Stormtroopers as "Agents" when running DH Allies)
Fast Attack:
Assault Squad (Plasma Pistol/Twin Lightning Claws)
[April]Land Speeder Storm (Multi-Melta)
[September]Land Speeder Storm (Multi-Melta)
Elite:
[August]Assault Terminators w/Land Raider Redeemer
[March] Dreadnought MM/CCW(HF) w/Drop Pod
Dreadnought MM/CCW(HF) w/Drop Pod
(Alternate: Eversor Assassin when running DH Allies)
Heavy Support:
[May]Thunderfire Cannon
[October]Whirlwind
Whirliwind
[December] Obejctive Marker (current plan, a Hydra — what their symbol becomes after the Heresy)
<EDIT>
As of the end of January, I figured out a plan to combine squads so that by the end of the year the entire army is done, not just the challenge squads:
Jan – Shrike (done)
Feb – "Telion" 10 man scout squad PLUS all of the other snipers, bolters and heavy weapons scouts from the two other close-combat Storm-riders.
March – Both dreads and both drop pods
April – Both Storms
May – Thunderfire Cannon
June – Cato Sicarius PLUS a command squad that I haven't figured out yet.
July – Tac squad PLUS the other two in the list (30 dudes), PLUS the Rhino and both Razorbacks.
August – 10 Assault Termies & LR Redeemer
September – Assault Squad (plus maybe a Vanguard Vet Squad)
October – Both Whirlwinds
November – The Clost Combat scouts from the two Storm-riding squads
December – 5 Objective markers…
We'll see how it goes…..
</EDIT>
Found my objective markers…. The Alpha Legion eventually use the Hydra as their chapter symbol after succumbing to the influences of the dark gods…
It's from Warmaster, so it's small enough to fit on a 40mm base…

Here's the first work on the challenge…
Captain Shrike needed to be "de-Ravenized" so I got to work with the knife, the files and the green-stuff. Here are the results:
Oops! The bottom broke off of his foot. I may need to mount him using a brass rod…. Note the Raven has been taken off of his chest, and it's been "smoothed" over.

The wings had to come off of his helmet:

I filled-in the shoulder-pad with GS. I'll sand it smooth when it's nice and dry:

In this shot you can see that I've taken the wing off the bottom of the right pad as well:

The BIG raven's head had to come off the bottom of the jump pack. I figure since he's a Primarch (Omegon), it's OK for his pack to be a bit ornate.

Here's one of my test models. I originally was going to use blue, but in Index Astartes IV (which I happened to have purchased several years ago on a whim) pretty well shows the pre-heresy colors to be purple or violet with light green highlights. I will probably use the color on his left shoulder pad for the basic color.

Here's the scheme for the main force at the moment:

<<It took awhile to get enough warmth to prime Shrike… er…. Omegon….>>
The paint is done… I tried the Payne's Grey wash suggested by Ifurita. Here's a link to his painting site. The wash is drying and then I have to assemble him and try to figure out how to get him onto the base (the part that attaches to his foot broke off).
Here he is. I used brass rod into his foot and then bent it so that it would go into the hole I drilled into the base.

HQ Complete!! That was it for the January painting challenge.

February — The scouts had to take a Green Stuff bath and get reprimed… What follows is the step-by step process of completing them…
Based & Primed!!

Didn't have much time in the first week or so. I was attending DunDraCon and so I had to get my Sisters army ready (for all the good it did me…) BUT. We finally had a good day to prime, so I got the last two models primed. When I'm doing units, I use an "assembly-line." I do all the same color/area on every model and then move on.
<<The Following smaller pics are clickable thumbnails.>>
Here's everyone ready for the assembly-line process:

EVERYONE GETS A FACE!!!

Gentleman! PUT ON YOUR PANTS!!

Boots & Carapace armor painted:

I guess it's *technically* tourny legal now with three colors and basing materials… But FAR from done….
Boys, STRAP IT UP!! Straps & pouches done:

Still had to do hair, weapons, do-dads and cloaks, but that was it for that night….
Weapon's free, gentlemen!!

Vallejo "Earth" color paint for the bases…

Pretty funny. Jake said "what are these, the "Scene" Marines? You're doing their hair & make-up?"
Smart-aleck 14 year olds….
Hair:

I then did the whites of the eyes and the pupils, but I didn't take photos for that stage. I don't know what possessed me to do that. I rarely do. But, I think it was knowing that I was going to be taking photos and posting them for all the world to see…
I went with the Reaper "Stone" triad for the Camo Cloaks. "Shadowed Stone" for the basic cloak color. "Stone Grey" as a dry-brush over the folds. "Weathered Stone" as one of the flecks in the camo pattern, along with Vallejo "German Grey" and GW "Mechrite Red." Everything was again finished with a wash using Liquitex "Payne's Grey."

DONE!!
Bolter dudes:

Heavy Weapons:

Snipers:

Cloak detail:

Boss man "Telion":

I will, at some point, go back and do some details (skulls, etc.) and put their Alpha Legion chain-crossed "A" on their shoulder.
That's it for February… Getting ready for March….

Dreads & Drop-Pods for March…
Here's the Drop-pod part:

I've been assembling the second pod. I had forgotton how nasty these are to build!
Got my hands on two AoBR dreads, so I gotta get those and the second Pod primed, and then on to the brushes!
