wow…. that's absolutely amazing. And yet.. I cannot help but feel as though it is inevitable to totally go to waste. Of all the games to spend this much time, this much money, this much effort, this much artistry on…
How much of that could actually be utilized in a game? All these wonderfully designed buildings and canyons in an actual game only serve to block units and line-of-fire. It would be difficult to drag your squads through that terrain.
And the game most certainly wasn't designed to be played on that terrain. The point costs, the squad formations, the rulebook in general… it just wasn't created with the idea in mind that no one would ever get to shoot at an opponent who wasn't already within charging distance and that all units get cover saves at all times.
In fact… if one isn't playing Tyrnids, Orks, Blood Angels, Space Wolves or Raven Guard (maybe Kroot if you are really lucky) then you may as well walk up to the board, take one look and then say "I forfeit" because the entire game would be merely you serving your units up for mass slaughter on a golden platter.
Now, if this were going to be used for an RPG of some sort (Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, Inquisitor) or even a Necromunda-style game, that's a different story entirely! You couldn't possibly ask for a better board to play a session… even an entire campaign on!
But… for 40K? It's so much more of a hindrance than a help unless you are playing an elite close combat monster army that it would make playing terribly unfun. :( (Unless you are the odd Tau or Imperial Guard player who likes never rolling anything the entire game except armor saves)
Certainly the person or people who made such a thing deserve some sort of reward, some sort of commedation… I hope somehow they get paid well for their work! But it's just such a negative when it comes to actual play enviroment. I really hope this board can be utilized for a more suitable purpose.
