Warmachine is a game that's pretty easy to have a lot of lists and encounter levels for, but I think it would be a good idea to talk about a "standard" Encounter Level for our Wednesday night (or just general) mayhem.

Looking around the Privateer Press forums, it seems like 35 point lists are the most commonly built.  From what I understand of the Mk.1 ruleset (which is admittedly very little) this is a substitute for the old 500 point level.  It seems like just enough points to squeeze in a few jacks, a unit or two, and a couple of solos.  I've built a few lists at this level and I like it a lot, as it seems to encourage fast games without limiting the number of cool tricks in your army too much.

What sort of points levels did you guys play back in Mk.1?

500s mostly. In mk1 you could only use epic warcasters at 750+ so that level got to be popular as more of the epics came out.

With as many new players as we have, I think 25s might be a good place to start. That point level makes for a good combined arms game while keeping the model count relatively low. Low model count facilitates learning what your models can do and helps keep your painting queue manageable.

That's my $.02 anyway.

I think it makes sense for people to show up with a 25 and a 35 list (those who can).  If people want to schedule a larger game, they can propose it on the slick new store forums…

I also think that for an evening's play, going to 50 is a bit long.

Agreed, 50's going to be a 2-3 hour game.

Also agree that options are good.

Personally I'll be sticking to 25 for a while. In my last couple of games I've found that all my mk1 experience is actually hurting me! New statlines and subtle rules changes (oh, knockdown, how I miss your mk1 efficacy) are constantly tripping me up.
